Sid, Gwenny and Boyo are left to look after their eccentric and mysterious mother after their father disappears to America. Sid and Gwenny make a slow descent into drugs and alcohol and enter a fantasy world where they become the incarnation of the 'beat generation' author Jack Kerouac and his girlfriend Joyce Johnson. At the same time their unstable mother slips further into madness leaving Boyo to discover the truth and the reasons for his mother's instability.
