Set against the backdrop of the 1916 war against Pancho Villa, Gary Cooper stars as a discredited army officer, Thorn, given the task of leading five Medal of Honour candidates to the military base of Cordura, Texas. Thorn hopes that he will discover what these men possess which he lacks. But as the gruelling journey progresses the true colours of the 'heroes' soon becomes clear.
