However, he finds Dickie and his girlfriend Marge so welcoming that he becomes part of their circle. Eventually Ripley is so seduced by their way of life that when the opportunity arises to become Dickie he takes it. The English Patient - The passionate and epic drama of two haunting love stories set in North Africa and Italy before and during World War II, based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by Michael Ondaatje and winner of seven Oscars. The story is told in retrospect through the history of four characters who find themselves in a ruined monastery in Italy at the end of the war. Each is a victim, damaged in some way by the events of the war. Slowly they reveal their stories and we discover the history of each character.
