Ramallah Concert, The/ Knowledge Is The Beginning Movie

The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra started as a Workshop in 1999 comprising talented young musicians between the ages of 14 and 25 from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Tunisia and Israel. The idea was that they would come together to make music on neutral ground, with the guidance of some of the world's best musicians. The Workshop has taken place annually since then, and now has a permanent home in Seville, Spain. In 2005 the Orchestra made a hugely-successful international tour that culminated in this extraordinary concert in the city of Ramallah. This was the first time the Orchestra gave a concert in one of its members' home countries. It was standing-room only in the 700-seat concert hall, and the atmosphere was electric. The programme included Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major and Beethoven's Symphony No.5. The Ramallah Concert DVD features the entire concert, with an 18 minute prologue and a short epilogue showing events before and after the event. For example, the young Israeli members of the orchestra had to enter and leave the Palestinian Territory in bullet-proof cars and could not stay overnight. 'Knowledge Is The Beginning', by Paul Smazcny, is a powerful documentary about the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, filmed over 6 years, and includes footage of rehearsals and concerts in various countries, including the orchestra's first concert in an Arab country. This is a re-edited and much longer version of a documentary released earlier this year, including footage of Daniel Barenboim controversially receiving the Wolf Prize from the Israeli parliament.
