The compelling story of a mentally-challenged father, Sam Dawson, who tries to raise his daughter, Lucy, with the help of a group of friends. As Lucy turns seven and begins to intellectually surpass her father, their relationship comes under the scrutiny of a social worker who wants Lucy to be placed in foster care. Sam vows to fight the legal system even though his case seems unwinnable. He forms an unlikely alliance with Rita Harrison, a high-powered, self-absorbed attorney who initially takes the case pro bona as a challenge from her colleagues. Together they try to convince the system that Sam should have his daughter back.
