Howie Blitzer is a sensitive fifteen year old who has recently lost his mother in a car crash. His father is unsympathetic and Howie is left to cope with his grief by himself. His best friend Gary convinces Howie to help him and his friends to rob local houses. In the aftermath of these burglaries Howie and his friends meet ex-marine Big John and Howie discovers the secret that binds his friend to this mysterious older man. When his best friend suddenly skips town and his father is arrested over a bad business deal, the only person who seems to care about Howie is Big John.
