In the remote Scottish highlands, the British Army are performing training exercises using Geiger counters to locate radioactive samples in preparation for a possible fallout from a nuclear attack. When a fissure opens in the earth the two soldiers are exposed to radiation, one fatally, the army calls in nuclear scientist Dr. Adam Royston. Royston is independently conducting experiments on neutralising radioactive fields and when more victims of this unknown force emerge, Royston is called upon to devise a method for combating the unseen menace.
